Lets first understand basics of Ketosis. When your body adapts to using Fat as energy your liver produces Ketones which are used as energy in place of glucose. Ketones are a much cleaner and a preferred source of energy. During the Third Trimester in Pregnancy, infants are naturally in a state of Ketosis in the mothers womb. Breastfed babies too remain in Ketosis till they are weaned off onto a regular refined carbohydrate and sugar diet. but if you maintain the nutrient combination well, then you can maintain ketogenic state in a growing child. The brain in a Infant and a growing child demands high energy and 75% of the daily energy through food is supplied to brain for development. In adults this changes to 25% of total energy consumed through food. During the growth phase of the Child, the brains preferred source of energy is DHA, a type of Omega 3 fatty acid and Ketones. This is why a diet of a growing child should contain saturated fat which is high in Omega 3 fatty acids and maintains the ketogenic state. Ketones are a preferred source of fuel not just by the brain but by heart and other tissues as well. The Bigger the brain the better the Iq of a child. Research has proven that Ketones, Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Iodine play a huge role in development of brain and Intelligence of a child.
